Baku-APA. Suspected Boko Haram fighters on Monday went on rampage in Nigeria's northeastern state of Adamawa, killing residents and burning down buildings, local security sources and witnesses said, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Attackers stormed the Michika town with sophisticated weapons and shot indiscriminately at residents, a Nigerian military personnel said.

According to the security source, government forces were quickly deployed to contain the carnage and cordon off the area.

But a source, identified as a youth leader in the area, said casualties might be high in number because the attackers had wreaked havoc in the area before the arrival of security operatives.

Efforts by a Xinhua reporter in the state to get exact figure of casualties proved abortive as officials were yet to comment or issue any official statement on the attack.

Monday's attack occurred 24 hours after scores of Boko Haram militants were killed in a massive attack launched by the group but repelled by Nigerian troops in Maiduguri and other towns in the neighboring Borno State.

Many of the militants who attacked Maiduguri on Sunday were also captured with wounds, according to a statement by the Nigerian defense headquarters.

Boko Haram had recently taken over some cities in Nigeria's northeastern region. The militant group has killed thousands of people in its five-year insurgency in Nigeria.
