Baku-APA. Libya's new parliament on Tuesday approved that the next president would be elected through direct elections in the eastern city of Tobruk, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
A total of 141 members of Libya's House of Representatives voted for the future Libyan head of state to be directly elected by the people, with one member opposing and two members abstaining.
According to Libya's transitional plan, the new parliament, House of Representatives, has replaced the former interim General National Congress and a presidential election will ensue to end the country's transitional phase.
The House of Representatives has made no decision about the date of the presidential election.
Libya has witnessed a drastic escalation of violence since the 2011 turmoil which toppled its former leader Muammar Gaddafi. The recent deadly clashes between rival armed factions in major cities like Tripoli and Benghazi were feared to turn into a full-fledged civil war.
The new parliament has been boycotted by some of the lawmakers and was forced to move its meeting place to Tobruk, as heavy clashes between rival militias raged on the major cities.
