Thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters took to the streets of Cairo on Thursday to mark the first anniversary of the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi following a military coup in July 2013.

The military coup led by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, former army chief and the country’s current president, brought down Morsi, who was the first democratically-elected president since the fall of the dictator Hosni Mubarak.

Since Morsi's ouster, the country has been the scene of violent anti-government protests with almost daily clashes between security forces and Morsi supporters.

Almost a year after the coup, el-Sisi nominated himself to run for president. He won an election in which less than 50 percent of eligible voters took part.

Three of the supporters of the former president were killed in the Haram neighborhood of Giza, south of Cairo, where security forces attacked protesters and injured dozens of them.

Two other people were also killed in a bomb blast in Kerdasa, a western district of the capital city.

Rights groups say the army’s crackdown on the supporters of Morsi has left over 1,400 people dead so far.
