Baku-APA. At least 23 people perished in multiple road accidents in northwest Nigeria's Katsina State, authorities said Tuesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
Deputy Commissioner of Police in the state Bala Senchi said some vehicles plunged into a collapsed bridge at Yar'randa Village located in Charanchi local government area.
He said the first crash involved a bus conveying 24 passengers, which rammed into the bridge few minutes after its collapse on Monday night.
Witnesses said the bridge collapsed due to heavy downpour and, moments later, the bus conveying passengers from neighboring Kano State plunged into the fallen bridge.
"Some 10 bodies have been recovered and deposited at the mortuary of General Hospital Kankia, while the search for 12 others is ongoing," Senchi said, adding that two survivors have been identified.
Government officials, including a representative of Nigeria's minister of works, visited the accident spot on Tuesday, to assess the damage.
The deputy police chief said normalcy had returned to the area as officers were quickly drafted to cordon off the spot.
