Baku-APAAt least one student was killed and three others injured on Thursday during clashes at Alexandria University in northern Egypt, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The state television said the student was killed before security reached the scene, but state-run al-Ahram news said the confrontations were between students and security forces around the campus.

The student protesters hurled stones at the security forces while security escalated force by using tear-gas, al-Ahram reported, adding that security officials accused the students of " rioting."

Student protests have become common in Egypt since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi by the military last July, leading to the deaths of some students and to the arrests of hundreds of others.

Supporters of Morsi have staged numerous protests since his deposition, denouncing the army's move as a "coup" and calling for his reinstatement.

Alexandria University's clashes came two days ahead of the third anniversary of January 25, 2011 mass protest that toppled ex- president Hosni Mubarak.

Despite the arrest of activists and protesters under the protest law issued last November that requires protesters to obtain approval from the government before staging protests, Morsi loyalists and revolutionary youth groups are planning to demonstrate against the interim government on the anniversary, while supporters of the government and the military are planning mass celebrations for the same day.
