Baku-APA. British police have clashed with student protesters staging a rally to demand free education, APA reports quoting Press TV.

Scuffles broke out inside and outside major stores in the city of Brighton between police and over 400 students who participated in the demonstration on Saturday.

The students protested against alleged tax avoidance by the stores, which, they argue, has forced the government to raise the tuition fees of universities.

“We are working with [protest] organizers to minimize, as far as possible, disruption to the city while the various activities take place,” Katy Woolford, a police official, said.

“It is vitally important that those attending the events work with us and comply with directions or other restrictions which we will need to give to keep people safe,” Woolford added.

Similar protests have recently been held in various universities across the country as the government of UK Prime Minister David Cameron has announced a rise in higher education fees.

Students at the University of Warwick staged a protest on Wednesday as part of nationwide demonstrations by the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts.

Clashes erupted after police officers arrived at the scene of the protest at the university’s Senate House.

More nationwide days of action are expected to be observed by students later in December over the fee hikes.
