Baku hosts 8th meeting of CIS Council of Heads of Migration Services

The representatives of seven countries, international organizations are attending the event. Current situation in the field of migration, future tasks, ways of combating illegal migration, amendments and annexes to the action plan of the Council, chairmanship of the Council, determination of the venue and agenda of the 9th meeting of the Council are being discussed at the meeting.

Chief of department on work with the law-enforcement bodies of Azerbaijan’s Presidential Administration Fuad Alasgarov gave information about the work done in regard to the migration policy in Azerbaijan. According to him, since 2007 much attention has been paid to the migration processes, related state program approved, State Migration Service established.

Fuad Alasgarov said Azerbaijan is the first country in the CIS area to face the problem of refugees and internally displaced persons, as a result of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and ethnic cleansing policy pursued by Armenia, over one million people have been expelled from their native lands.

Noting that there are migrant workers in Azerbaijan like in all countries, Fuad Alasgarov attributed it to Azerbaijan’s economic and social developments, ongoing processes, social-political stability and tolerance of Azerbaijani people. He said from the transit country for migrants Azerbaijan has turned into the country of residence.
