Roundtable “The role of raising awareness on human trafficking” held in Baku

Baku. Shahriyar Alizadeh – APA. A roundtable “The role of raising awareness on human trafficking” has been held in Baku today, APA reports. Chairperson of the State Committee for the Problems of Families, Women and Children made a keynote speech at the event.
“This problem is always in the focus of attention of the international organizations. Human trafficking causes the violation of the rights of women and children. We made a film about human trafficking and distributed among schools. It had a great influence on the awareness,” she said.

Following this, former President of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga addressed the event. She said women’s rights were violated as a result of human trafficking all over the world, they underwent sexual and physical abuse.
“There should be serious approach to this issue in the legislation. Criminals should not only be arrested. Victims should be rehabilitated,” she said.

Chief of the Interior Ministry’s Department to Combat Human Trafficking Javad Shikhaliyev said in combating human trafficking they were closely cooperating with the Ministry of National Security, Prosecutor General’s Office, Justice Ministry and other bodies.
“Hotline was set up in 2007. Moreover, our department has an official website. Shelter for the children, who became victims of human trafficking, was opened in 2009. This shelter has been supplied with necessary devices. The first National Action Plan on combating human trafficking was completed successfully. The second National Action Plan has been prepared for 2009-2013. 144 victims of human trafficking have received medical aid,” he said.

Parliamentarian Ganira Pashayeva spoke about the role of mass media and NGOs in combating human trafficking. She said there was a need to raise awareness.

Chief of the Justice Ministry’s Department for Human Rights and Public Affairs Faig Gurbanov said 24 were arrested over human trafficking in 2010. He spoke about the necessity of cooperation.

Chairperson of the Women’s Society for Regional Development Shahla Ismayilova noted the importance of strengthening struggle against human trafficking not only in Baku, but also in the regions.
