Baku. Ilhama Isabalayeva – APA. “The examples discovered in Oglangala have no relation to the monuments around Urmia and lakes of Van and Goyce. These are local examples”, researcher of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and head of the Sharur archeological researches Safar Ashurov told APA reacting to the reports of Iranian newspapers that archeological findings in Oglangala belonged to ancient state of Media.

The researcher said ANAS office in Nakhchivan, the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography and US Pennsylvania University began researches in Oglangala monument in Sharur region of Nakhchivan three years ago. “The archeological excavations were conducted in Naringala this year and ruins of a great palace were discovered there. The archeologists could fully restore Naringala. They also discovered the examples of Khojaly-Gedabey culture of the 2nd millennium BC, which proved the relations between Khojaly-Gedabey culture and Nakhchivan”, said Ashurov. “It was a preliminary phase of the settlement in Oglangala, but the fortress was formed as the city beginning from 8th century BC”.

The historian also denied Armenian reports that Oglangala was an Urartu monument. “The Urartu ceramics found there were brought to the fortress. 99% of the findings are local. According to the researches, Oglangala was a center of large tribal unity in Sharur steppe. They could resist against Urartu and Oglangala prevented the Urartu movement to Nakhchivan. There are no facts that Urartu people were Armenians. The world’s scientists confirmed that Urartu had no relations to the Armenians”.

Ashurov said that Oglangala had connection with the state of Atropatena in its last period. Media examples found there are less than Manna examples. The institute conducts radio-carbon analyses to specify dates of the archeological findings. The examples found this year were also sent to the United States for radio-carbon analyses.
