 Event devoted to June 20 – World Refugee Day held in Baku

The event was held by the organization of UNHCR representation in Azerbaijan, State Committee for Refugees and IDPs and International Eurasia Press Fund. Video appeal of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres, UN Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie’s video chart, 13-minute film “Longing for home and inextinguishable hopes” were demonstrated at the event. The film has been dedicated to the problems of IDPs in Azerbaijan. Information about Nagorno Karabakh conflict was also reflected in the film.

Delivering a speech at the event Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Republic, Head of State Committee on Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons, Chairperson of Republic Commission on International Humanitarian Aid Ali Hasanov noted that Azerbaijan had lived with IDP problem for 18 years, 20 percent of our lands were under the Armenian occupation. He thanked NGOs from America, Europe and Arabic countries for their aid to IDPs settled down in Azerbaijan. Hasanov said that occupation fact was continued and that Armenia used the occupied territories for planting drugs. He also noted that Armenia prepared terror groups in the occupied territories.

UNHCR representative in Azerbaijan Arun Sala-Ngharmin noted the importance of shown aid to refugees and IDPs of international unity. “Refugees and IDPs live in difficult conditions, but it does not mean that they have no future”, he said.
