Deputy Secretary General said the draft convention would be ready by the end of the year, it envisaged concrete measures to prevent violence against women and would improve the related legislation.

Maud de Boer-Buquicchio mentioned that 25 years had passed since the first conference of the Council of Europe on gender equality.
“We are pleased that the majority of the Council of Europe members have legislation to combat gender inequality and violence against women,” she said.
According to Deputy Secretary General, there is difference between the legislation and reality, women suffer more from poverty and unemployment, the image of the woman created by mass media sometimes consist of stereotypes, these stereotypes should be eliminated.

Asked whether the Council of Europe would take any steps concerning the women whose rights were violated as a result of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio said the rights of the refugees and IDPs were violated more.
“They need help more than others,” she said.
