Baku. Kamala Guliyeva – APA. Director of Germany-based Nizami Ganjavi Institute of Azerbaijani Culture, poetess Nourida Ateshi, who is researching the history of Caucasian Amazons, is examining now Amazon River in Brazil, Ateshi told APA. “Why this place, which is larger for two times than Europe and named “Heart of Brazil”, was called Amazonian Basin? Is Amazon, but not Nile, the world’s larger river really? Why 60 percent of this large country was named Amazonas? Why Amazons became so popular in this country. There are large banks, theaters, parks and hundreds of companies in Brazil, which were named after Amazons. Why statues of Amazons were installed outside the parliament in Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas and their pictures were hanged on the walls of grandiose buildings? How the Amazons’ name reached Brazil? I visited Brazil for several days as the first Caucasian researcher to find answers to all these questions. I visited museums and archives of Manaus and then met with Indigenous tribes at the Amazon jungles to learn history of these lands”, said Ateshi.

The researcher clarified version of Amazon’s name in Brazil. “Spanish captain San Francisco Orianda and his expedition group reached these lands in 1541 and met with a group of armed women. Captain Orianda didn’t consider women as enemy and tried to avoid confrontation with them, but fighter women attacked and disarmed the Spanish sailors. The captain called them “Amazon fighters” and named those lands Amazonien. The South Caucasus is a homeland of Amazon women, but then they moved toward the Western Asia and later on Greeks declared them as Greek women and entered their names into the legends, art works and popularize them throughout the world”.

According to APA, Brazilians measured the length of Amazon River in the past three years and set it as longer than Nile, the longest river of the world. Two parallel rivers, white and black, create sources of Amazon”,

Ateshi said she is completing scenarios for historic fiction and documentary, as well as doctorate work about the Amazons. She said her travel to Brazil made her researches and creation work richer.

Ateshi said she had quite enough scientific, archeological and historic facts about that the Amazons were ancestors of the Caucasus, particularly Azerbaijani women and their first homes were in Azerbaijani land of Karabakh. Only cave of Amazons is in Gobustan”.

The researcher is in Baku currently and continuing her researches.
