Baku. Elbrus Seyfullayev – APA. Roundtable “Council of Europe and Azerbaijan: new stage in the protection of human rights†devoted to the 60th anniversary of the Council of Europe and 50th anniversary of the European Court of Human Rights has been organized by Azerbaijani ombudsman, APA reports. Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova said Azerbaijan’s cooperation with the Council of Europe continued successfully, legal framework had been improved in the country. Ombudsman said ---- bribery in the country, facts of torture were observed in related bodies, there were cases of interference in the work of municipalities. Elmira Suleymanova said it was important to eliminate those shortcomings. Ombudsman also noted the importance of cancelling the structures lower than municipalities.
Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe to Azerbaijan Veronika Kotek said they were satisfied with the cooperation between the Council of Europe and Azerbaijan, they were doing their best to deepen the cooperation.
Chairman of the parliament’s standing commission on legal policy and state-building Ali Huseynov said there were no principle contradictions between Azerbaijan’s legislation and European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
“There may be some non-conformity,†he said.
Ali Huseynov said Azerbaijan had fulfilled great majority of the commitments undertaken upon accession to the Council of Europe. He noted that working group was preparing draft law on alternative service.
Ali Huseynov also proposed to establish the relevant body under ombudsman’s office to study European precedent law.
“In this case, the group will be able to examine the country’s legislation and study its compliance with the international law,†he said.
