Baku. Hafiz Heydarov – APA. 1029 intravenous drug addicts were infected with human immunodeficient virus (HIV) in Azerbaijan in 2008. Head of the Working Group of the State Commission to Combat Drug Addiction and Illicit Drug Turnover Araz Aliguliyev told APA. He said according to the information of law-enforcement bodies, 2.210 tones of drugs were removed from the illicit turnover in 2008. Aliguliyev said 2889 drug-related crimes were recorded in 2008, 1202 of them were related to selling, 1574 keeping and 97 to illegal planting. Head of the Working Group said 2411 people were held accountable over illicit drug turnover, 69 of them were women, 64 foreigners, 5 persons under 18. Aliguliyev said 347 tones of narcotic plants were burned within a year and added that drugs were smuggled in the country via Afghanistan-Iran-Azerbaijan route.
Araz Aliguliyev said 21,868 people had been registered as drug addicts in Azerbaijan by the end of 2008, 420 of them were women.
“Unfortunately, 1029 intravenous drug addicts were infected with human immunodeficient virus (HIV) in Azerbaijan in 2008,†he said.
