Interior Ministry and General Prosecutor’s Office spread information about the prevention of arms smuggling
Ganja City Police Office after the preliminary investigations launched a criminal case on articles 206.1 and 228.4 of the criminal Code of Azerbaijan Republic. The case was sent to the Ganja City Prosecutor’s Office to continue investigation there because of probability of functionaries and foreigners involving in the crime. The investigators made clear that employee of the Istanbul-based Turkish Oz Nuhoglu Transportation Company’s Baku Office Sayavush Eyvazov, head of the Sumgayit-based “Franky†arm-trader firm Gurbat Najafov, resident of Agstafa Region and former employee of the “Broker†organization near Red Bridge frontier post Ilham Rahimov and Turkey’s citizen named Haji Sharaf were involved in criminal affiliations and agreed to smuggle ammunitions to Azerbaijan. Haji Sharaf smuggled the ammunitions through Turkey-Georgia border, handed it over to Sayavush Eyvazov so that he could deliver it to Sumgayit resident Gurbat Najafov for sale. Sayavush Eyvazov loaded “GAZel†vehicle owned by unidentified Georgian citizens with ammunitions, brought to Georgia-Azerbaijan border and told his acquaintance Ilham Rahimov to smuggle the goods to Azerbaijan. On October 13, 2008 Ilham Rahimov smuggled the ammunitions through “Sinig korpu†border checkpoint, loaded KamAZ owned by Intigam Valiyev with the ammunitions in Shikhli village of Gazakh region, but was detained by the police on the way to Sumgayit.
It was found out that the members of the gang had smuggled sporting guns, its spare parts and cartridges to Azerbaijan several times before. Sayavush Eyvazov, Gurbat Najafov and Ilham Rahimov faced charges under article 206.3.2 of the Criminal Code and were arrested. Investigation is underway to hold accountable other persons, who participated in committing the crime, and determine other crimes committed by the gang members.
