Baku. Konul Kamilgizi – APA. “According to the international law, Iran has the right to use 50% of water resources of the Araz River. However this will have a negative impact on the Azerbaijani economy in the future,” President of National Ecological Forecasting Centre Telman Zeynalov told APA.
He said that according to the law, each country owns 50% of water resources of transboundary rivers flowing through its territory: “Iran can use the part of the Araz river passing through its territory. It is likely that Azerbaijani government gave consent to Iran’s water transfer of the Araz River to Lake Urmia. This issue is regulated by the law and no one can prevent or intervene in it.”
Ecologists noted that water transfer of the Araz River to Lake Urmia will lead to the reduction of Azerbaijan’s water resources: “Reduction of water resources will cause difficulties for irrigation of crops, increase in prices of agricultural products and shortage. These processes will be observed next year.”
