APA reports quoting Delphi agency that the head of state didn’t deny the truth of phone conversations and said that it will be a lesson for the Lithuanian diplomatic service: “I appreciate this situation in two ways. First, it is a provocation, because non-public conversations were made public. Actually it is a provocation against Lithuania, which is chairing the European Union and preparing the Eastern Partnership meeting. On the other hand, I consider these conversations as unprofessional and imperfect diplomatic service. If the content of the conversations had been different, it would not have been provocation. I hope that this will be a good lesson for the entire diplomatic service so that they do not ease off and become more disciplined.”
Records have been uploaded to youtube.com on 8 July, 2013, in one of which, two Lithuanian diplomats are said to be involved in a conversation. It is presumed that one of the diplomats is Zenonas Kumetaitis, deputy director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Eastern Neighbourhood Policy Department, and the other one is Renatas Juška, Lithuania’s Ambassador to Hungary. The men in the recording are having an informal conversation about Azerbaijan-Armenia relations, personal opinions on the conflict between the two countries, Azerbaijani and Armenians’ active participation in the resolution of issues related to them at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the establishment of a group of friendship with Nagorno-Karabakh in the Lithuanian Seimas.
The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry confirmed the reports on the resignation of Renatas Juška, Lithuania’s Ambassador to Hungary.
The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry and Ambassador of Azerbaijan to this country regarded this incident as a provocation.
