European countries insist that Russia must end its war in Ukraine before they discuss Moscow's demands concerning the continent's security architecture, APA reports, citing Bloomberg.
According to the agency, European officials consider Russian President Vladimir Putin's demands, which are effectively aimed at eliminating NATO's presence in Eastern Europe, unacceptable.
European officials believe that one of the main purposes of the existing security system is to prevent possible Russian military aggression against European countries.
Sources told Bloomberg that discussing Europe's security architecture would be pointless while Moscow continues its war against Ukraine and violates a number of existing agreements.
However, Europe's position could create additional tensions in relations with the administration of US President Donald Trump.
According to the report, Washington wants Russia's proposals concerning Europe's security architecture to be discussed in parallel with peace negotiations on Ukraine.
The US administration's efforts to reach an agreement with Moscow have raised concerns in some European capitals.
Commenting on the issue, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said Europe should not appear more interested in achieving peace than the Russian president.
"We should not want peace more than Putin does," the minister emphasized.
