Speaker of Milli Majlis attends summit of Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean

The 1st Summit of Speakers of Parliaments of member and partner countries of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean was held today, the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis told APA.

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova attended the summit.

In her speech at the summit, Sahiba Gafarova stated that over the past 20 years, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean has established itself as an important platform for developing interparliamentary cooperation and promoting dialogue, mutual understanding, and shared responsibility for peace and stability in a strategically important region.

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis noted that although Azerbaijan is not geographically part of the Mediterranean region, it has long-term ties and constructive relations with Mediterranean basin and Gulf countries. She said that Azerbaijan contributes to regional and international energy security through the diversification of energy routes and supplies.

It was also noted that the country plays an active role in the development of transport connectivity between East and West, especially within the framework of the Middle Corridor. These efforts contribute to strengthening cooperation and promoting common economic resilience.

Positively assessing the decision of the Assembly to grant observer status to the parliaments of both Azerbaijan and Armenia, Sahiba Gafarova said that, as noted by President Ilham Aliyev, the two countries are learning to live in peace after decades of conflict. She noted that this step could contribute to the development of dialogue and confidence-building between the two countries in line with ongoing efforts toward peace and normalization.

Stating that the parliaments of both countries are also working to build trust between the two peoples, Sahiba Gafarova said that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean could become another important platform for constructive cooperation.

At the same time, the importance of signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean was emphasized.
