Baku – APA. The Turkish government is going to open NATO's Incirlik airbase in the country for the Russian air forces, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in an interview with TRT Haber news channel.
Speaking about the details of the meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Sochi, Cavusoglu said the meeting was very helpful in terms of discussing bilateral and regional problems.
The FM said Turkey stands ready to cooperate with Russia in the fight against the “Islamic State” terrorist group, noting that for this purpose the government may open NATO's Incirlik airbase for Russian aircraft.
“To combat the IS terrorist group Turkey is ready to cooperate with any country. As you know the Incirlik airbase is open for countries intending to join the active fight against IS that is an enemy to all of us. As mentioned Sergey Lavrov, we have agreed on this matter,” said Cavusoglu.
The FM went on to say that presidents of the two countries [Turkey and Russia] will meet in late July – early August.
Preparations are underway for this meeting during which important decisions on the countries’ economy will be taken, according to him.
Cavusoglu said that he invited his Russian counterpart to attend the upcoming meeting of the Russian-Turkish High Level Strategic Cooperation Council in Antalya.
The Incirlik airbase is one of the NATO’s military bases located in Turkey. Along with Turkey, the US, the UK and Germany have deployed their military aircraft there.
