The Turkish Foreign Ministry has objected to Greece's attempt to adopt a map that violates Türkiye's maritime jurisdiction zones, said Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Öncü Keçeli, APA's Turkish bureau reports.

He said that Türkiye objected to Greece's maritime spatial planning map, which is included in the European Union's Maritime Spatial Planning Platform and violates Türkiye's maritime jurisdiction zones in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry stressed that the map in question was updated with reference to "competent Greek authorities" and that Greece was trying to legitimize the Eastern Mediterranean Exclusive Economic Zone, which it had not officially declared, through the EU, in violation of international maritime law.

Türkiye rejected this step as an "attempt to impose an illegal fact" and, recalling the continental shelf boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean that it submitted to the UN on March 18, 2020, noted that the alleged Exclusive Economic Zone shown on the Greek map remains within the Turkish continental shelf.
