Within the investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and publicly known as the “membership of referees in betting websites,” 18 people have been detained, APA reports, citing “TRT HABER.”
Following preliminary investigations, arrest warrants were issued for Murat Özkaya, president of the “Eyüpspor” club, and three referees.
It was reported that six of the detainees were released under judicial control, while investigations into the remaining nine individuals are ongoing.
The probe was launched over suspicions that certain referees and sports officials had registered on online betting platforms and obtained financial gains through these activities.
The Turkish Football Federation and the Ministry of Justice have reportedly been kept informed of the process in coordination.
