German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that, according to his information, negotiations on Ukraine are proceeding with difficulty and expressed hope that they will at least be able to agree on a position for achieving a ceasefire, APA reports citing DPA.
"I'm hearing that these are extremely difficult negotiations, since under serious time pressure, the focus is on reaching a ceasefire as quickly as possible," the prime minister said in an interview with ProSieben and Sat1 television.
Merz believes that an agreement on a ceasefire will allow for the beginning of a substantive dialogue with Russia.
DPA news agency sources in the EU also described the negotiations as "very complex." According to them, the US exerted significant pressure on Kyiv representatives during the meeting with the Ukrainian side.
