The French Ambassador to Georgia, Olivier Courtois, held a secret meeting with representatives of about 15 NGOs, APA’s Georgia bureau reports, citing the local media.
The meeting took place in a private apartment in Tbilisi. It was noted that the organizations attending the meeting have been exposed for engaging in anti-Georgian and unconstitutional activities.
Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Nino Tsilosani stated that the diplomat’s secret contacts with NGOs cast doubt on his personal reputation. According to her, the fact that the meeting was held in an apartment rather than at the embassy raises questions.
A member of the parliamentary majority, Levan Machavariani, also said that the fact the meeting took place in an apartment raises suspicions.
"Considering that the French ambassador is new, we hope he will not go beyond the framework of the Vienna Convention. It will be interesting to see what comments the French Embassy and the ambassador himself will make regarding the meeting," he added.
It should be noted that Olivier Courtois was appointed ambassador to Georgia in August of this year. The Georgian authorities had previously accused France’s former ambassador, Sheraz Gasri, of interfering in the country’s internal affairs and supporting the opposition.
