Former Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili has been sentenced to 7 years in prison, APA's local bureau reports.

The verdict was announced by the Tbilisi City Court.

The sentence was set at 5 years and 3 months under amnesty.

The former minister was charged with abuse of office in the 2004 murder of 19-year-old Buta Robakidze. Okruashvili was Georgia's Minister of Internal Affairs at the time.

The other defendant in the case, former Georgian Justice Minister Zurab Adeishvili, was acquitted.

The defense intends to appeal the court's decision to the Court of Appeal.

Okruashvili was arrested in July of this year for 8 months. He was accused of failing to comply with the legal request of the temporary investigative commission of the Georgian parliament.

Note that Okruashvili held the post of Minister of Defense of Georgia from 2004 to 2006.
