European Commission to suspend bilateral support to Israel

European Commission to suspend bilateral support to Israel

The European Commission has announced a proposal to suspend trade preferences for Israel and to halt bilateral support, APA reports citing the European Commission.

According to the statement, this decision will affect EU funding allocated to Israel for 2025–2027 as well as ongoing institutional cooperation projects.

The Commission said the move follows the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza after Israel’s military operations, the blockade of humanitarian aid, and the Israeli government’s decision to expand settlements—actions that severely damage prospects for a two-state solution.

“We propose suspending preferential trade with Israel, imposing sanctions on extremist ministers and violent settlers, and halting bilateral support except for civil society,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated.

If adopted, the proposals mean Israeli goods will lose priority access to the EU market and will face regular customs duties, as applied to any third country without a free trade agreement.

The EU is Israel’s largest trading partner. In 2024, 32% of Israel’s global trade was with the EU, and total trade between the two reached €42.6 billion.
