"Russia may attack one of the Baltic states in order to 'test' NATO defense in the coming years," said European Union Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius during his speech at the conference "Baltic Defense 2025: Lessons from War in Ukraine" held in Vilnius today, APA reports.
According to Kubilius, the main reason for the urgency of strengthening the defense of the Baltic region is the recent statements by the intelligence agencies of Germany, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and the Baltic states.
"Based on these statements, Putin may be ready to test NATO's Article 5 before 2030 - in the next two or four years," he noted.
The Defense Commissioner said that in such a case, the Baltic states could be "one of the most likely targets" of Kremlin aggression.
"This will be a threat to both NATO and the entire European Union," Kubilius stressed.
He called on EU and NATO countries to learn from Ukraine's struggle with Russia and accelerate their defense plans: "My main message is: let's ask the Ukrainians how to prepare for defense and use their experience."
