Three Chinese citizens were detained in Tbilisi for attempting to illegally obtain 2 kilograms of uranium, APA’s local bureau reports, citing Georgia’s State Security Service.

The detainees planned to illegally transport the radioactive material to China through Russian territory. The deal was estimated to be worth 400 thousand dollars.

The investigation revealed that one of the accused, who is illegally in Georgia, brought specialists interested in purchasing the uranium into the country and began searching for the uranium. His actions were coordinated by other members of the group from China.

Based on operational information, the Chinese citizens were detained at the stage of negotiating the illegal deal.

As part of the investigation, searches were conducted at the detainees’ temporary residences in Tbilisi and Batumi.

Investigative measures regarding the case are ongoing. If the guilt of the Chinese citizens is proven, they face up to 10 years in prison.
