Vladimir Stepanyan, the owner of the large Georgian developer Crystal Group, has been remanded in custody, APA's local bureau reports, citing Tbilisi City Court.
Stepanyan refused to speak in court. His lawyer filed a motion for his release on bail of 500,000 GEL.
The Prosecutor General's Office of Georgia has accused the businessman of illegal entrepreneurial activity and legalization of proceeds from crime.
According to the investigation materials, Stepanyan built five apartment hotels, a cable car and a ski slope without permission in the Bakuriani resort. The proceeds from the sale of the apartment hotels amount to several million GEL. At the current stage, the investigation has established the fact of legalization of illegal proceeds in the amount of 1.8 million GEL.
The committed criminal acts are punishable by imprisonment for a term of 9 to 12 years.
The activities of the Crystal Group company are currently being investigated, and the individuals involved in the crime are being identified.
