Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov met with Secretary-General and CEO of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Philippe Metzger, the Ministry of Energy told APA-Economics.
The meeting discussed expanding cooperation within the framework of Azerbaijan’s associate membership in the IEC, as well as the application of international standards in energy transition, electrification, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and new technologies.
The IEC Secretary-General highly appreciated Azerbaijan’s growing role in the global energy and climate agenda, particularly the initiatives it put forward in the fight against climate change during its COP29 presidency. It was stated that Azerbaijan’s associate membership in the organization since this year has created new opportunities for cooperation. It was noted that the IEC is ready to support Azerbaijan in standardization and conformity assessment in the fields of electrotechnology, electronics, clean energy, and energy efficiency.
The Minister of Energy provided information on reforms being implemented in Azerbaijan in the field of energy transition, the development of renewable energy sources, and improvements to the legislative framework in the field of energy efficiency. The work being carried out to align the regulatory and legal framework in the energy sector with international standards, as well as the continuation of energy initiatives put forward within the framework of COP29, was discussed. The importance of using the IEC’s technical expertise and standardization mechanisms in terms of applying modern technologies in projects implemented in the energy sector was noted.
The meeting noted that electrification has become one of the main trends in the future development of the global energy system and economy. In this regard, the importance of not only creating new energy generation capacities but also developing modern infrastructure that ensures the transmission, exchange, and delivery of electricity to consumers was highlighted. In this context, views were exchanged on the “Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor” project.
The importance of expanding cooperation with the IEC within the framework of the National Electrotechnical Committee and relevant technical working groups, as well as more active participation of local specialists in the process of developing standards, was noted.
