Ombudsman receives U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani Human Rights Commissioner Elmira Suleymanova received the U.S. Ambassador Anne Derse at the latterâ€™s request, ombudsmanâ€™s office told the APA.
The US Ambassador brought the attention to her countryâ€™s focusing on the efforts for the promotion of democracy and civil society, ensuring human rights of every individual and supports Azerbaijanâ€™s initiatives to build a powerful state.
Ms. Derse touched on the approval of National Action Plan for human rights protection in the country adding the document is quite balanced and through. She proposed five directions to be focused on while implementing the action plan: the rule of law and combating corruption, political reforms and free elections, building and promotion of institutions respecting human rights, freedom of press, societyâ€™s legal education, forming of democratic consciousness. The Ambassador presented related documents to the Ombudsman. The meeting also stressed importance of working in close cooperation with civil society, NGOs and international institutions.
Ms.Suleymanova stressed that the human rights commissioner also focuses on media rights protection, negative factors such as rude behavior and violence against journalists and added that related bodies are informed for addressing the problems within the framework of legislation. /APA/
