The president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, has used his speech before the United Nations General Assembly to respond directly to Donald Trump, defend the Iranian nuclear program and justify the military strengthening of the country as a necessity to avoid new threats. "Iran must be powerful to avoid being threatened," he stated before the leaders gathered in New York, Demócrata reports.
The speech comes one day after Trump threatened from the same podium to "annihilate" Iran if an agreement is not reached and reiterated that the United States will not allow Tehran to have nuclear weapons. The American president assured, however, that the conversations continue and that he is confident in reaching an understanding.
Pezeshkian has rejected the accusations made against his country and has assured that Iran does not pursue regional hegemony nor intends to acquire an atomic weapon. His goal, he defended, is to have sufficient capacity to guarantee its defense and develop nuclear technology for civilian purposes.
