The Jerusalem municipality intends to confiscate property owned by the Armenian Patriarchate through court proceedings, according to a post on the Patriarchate’s official “X” account, APA reports.
The move comes after the Patriarchate reportedly failed to pay accumulated taxes over several years. Court hearings on the matter are scheduled for September 29.
Israeli authorities clarified that the case concerns commercial properties owned by the religious institution, such as hotels and shops, rather than churches. Under the law, unpaid debts can lead to property seizure, which does not necessarily mean full confiscation of ownership. For instance, a commercial property can be frozen or closed until debts are fully paid.
