"HAMAS intends to maintain security control in Gaza during the transitional period and cannot make any commitments regarding the group's disarmament," HAMAS political bureau member Mohammad Nazzal said in an interview with Reuters, APA reports.
He added that the issues to be discussed in the next phase of the talks, including weapons, concern not only HAMAS but also other armed Palestinian groups and require a common position among Palestinians in general.
A senior HAMAS official also said that the organization is ready for a ceasefire of up to five years. Guarantees for what will happen in the future, he said, will depend on giving the Palestinians "hope" to establish a state.
Nazzal also said that negotiations on the second phase of the agreement will begin soon.
