The body discovered in the Istanbul Strait has been identified as that of Russian swimmer Nikolay Svechnikov, who went missing in August last year, APA’s Türkiye bureau reports, citing local media.
The preliminary forensic examination confirmed the identification.
Recall that Svechnikov, who was competing in an event in the Istanbul Strait last August with 2,820 athletes from 81 countries, was reported missing after failing to emerge from the water. A large-scale search operation was launched following the incident.
