Baku-APA. Earlier on Tuesday, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) confirmed it had received Pyongyang’s notification of plans to launch a satellite between February 8 and 25, APA reports quoting Sputnik.
"Carrying out a satellite launch like that one that has been discussed publicly would just be another destabilizing provocation on the part of the North Koreans," Earnest said.
The US State Department said later in the day that, if successful, the North Korean satellite launch would be a clear violation of numerous UN Security Council resolutions.
Tensions over North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs escalated after Pyongyang said on January 6 that it had successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test, triggering condemnation from the international community.
South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said Seoul would consider any of Pyongyang’s satellite launches as a ballistic missile test.
