Baku. Victoria Dementyeva –APA. “According to the Vienna Convention, consular officials can freely meet the citizens of the country they represent and are to have the opportunity to meet the citizens,” spokesman to the Foreign Ministry Elman Abdullayev told APA.

He noted that under article 36 of the Vienna Convention, consuls have the right to meet and talk with citizens held in a prison or detention facility and to take measures to provide legal assistance.

“Moreover, without any exception, authorized bodies are to inform the consular service about the arrest or detention of the citizen of this country. Talks are being held with the Iranian side to organize meeting with Azerbaijani citizens Khalida Khalid and Shamkhal Huseynov, who were detained in Tabriz on April 30. We hope in accordance with the clauses of the Vienna Convention, the Iranian side will soon create opportunities for the meeting of our diplomats with the detained citizens. We hope the Iranian side will take into account peaceful neighborly relations between our countries,” he said.

Iran’s ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohsen Pak-Ayeen told APA TV that it is impossible to meet with Khalida Khalid and Shamkhal Huseynov unless the investigation is over and the case is submitted to court. He called on the sides to demonstrate patience and wait for the results of the investigation.
