Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Mahmud Mammmadguliyev said that the start of negotiations was an important step in the relations: “Visa facilitation and readmission will contribute to Azerbaijan’s integration into the European Union. We would like the visa facilitation to cover most of all Azerbaijani citizens. At the same we must take into account that the signing and ratification of these agreements are only one side of the issue. It is necessary to improve the Azerbaijani legislature for implementation of these agreements”.

Mammadguliyev said that due to the visa facilitation certain work would be carried out in the border service on combating the illegal migration and other issues.

Head of EU Delegation in Azerbaijan, Ambassador Roland Kobia said that EU-Azerbaijan relations strengthened over the last year in political, social, economic and energy spheres: “The negotiation process will likely continue definite time. But I consider that the results will lead to the extension of the relations”.

On December 20, 2011, the EU Ministerial Council issued a mandate for holding negotiations on visa facilitation with Azerbaijan. Visa facilitation considers not canceling this regime as a whole, but decreasing the visa fees, reducing the number of documents required of decreasing the visa fees, as well as easing visa issue for persons of some categories.
