The meeting of the parties to the Tehran Convention is likely to be held in May, Ahmadreza Lahijanzadeh, deputy director of the Iranian Environmental Protection Organization for Sea and Lakes, told APA.

According to him, the environment ministers of the Caspian littoral states will visit Iran to participate in this meeting.

The deputy director noted that discussions will be held on the main threats to the Caspian Sea, including the decline in water levels and the increase in pollution, and that the participants of this meeting will cooperate to help the ecosystem of the Caspian Sea.

"In addition to the land border, Iran also has a maritime border with the friendly and neighboring country Azerbaijan, which increases the potential for cooperation between Tehran and Baku on the Caspian Sea," Ahmadreza Lahijanzadeh emphasized.

He added that Iran and Azerbaijan should increase cooperation on the Caspian Sea.

The deputy director suggested that Iranian and Azerbaijani researchers monitor the Caspian Sea and start activities to control pollution in the common area: "This can be very important and effective in the exchange of information between the two countries."
