Georgia’s Ombudsman, Levan Ioseliani, has opposed the restrictions established in the country regarding assemblies and demonstrations, APA’s local bureau reports.
The Public Defender has applied to the Constitutional Court in this regard.
Ioseliani also disagrees with the ban on covering one’s face with masks or other means during protests.
The lawsuit disputes the nature of the liability provided for in the Code of Administrative Offenses of Georgia as an alternative to arrest for violators of prohibitions, as well as the amount of the fine.
It should be noted that strict requirements regarding protests have come into force in Georgia since December 11 of last year. According to the new rules, it is prohibited to organize a protest in a public place without warning. The ban on covering the face with a mask at protests will be implemented from December 2024. Those who do not comply with this ban will be fined 2 thousand lari (1,263 AZN).
