The European Union (EU) has begun the procedure for imposing large-scale visa restrictions on senior Georgian officials, said European Commission spokesman Markus Lammert, APA's local bureau reports.
According to him, the European Commission has submitted its assessment of the visa-free regime with Georgia to the European Parliament and the Council of Europe.
"After the approval of the document, no senior representative of the ruling Georgian Dream party holding a diplomatic passport will be able to enter the 27 countries of the European Union without a visa," Lammert added.
The Commission official stressed that at a certain stage, if the decline continues, it may be possible to extend visa restrictions to the entire population of Georgia, but this will not happen automatically.
Note that the visa-free regime between Georgia and the EU has been in force since March 2017. More than 10 EU countries abolished the visa-free regime for holders of Georgian diplomatic and service passports last year.
