Kazak President offers shorter canal to link Caspian, Black seas

A canal, Eurasia, could be built to connect the Caspian and Black seas, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said at an economic forum in St. Petersburg Sunday, APA reports.
"The canal will give Central Asia access to the seas through Russia," Nazarbayev said.
Central Asia is rich in natural resources and needs transport corridors for exports, the Kazakh leader said.
The new Eurasia canal could be 1,000km (621 miles) shorter that Volga-Don shipping canal.
Nazarbayev also touched upon the idea of directing some Siberian rivers towards
Central Asia and Kazakhstan which was debated during the Soviet period. /APA/
