Baku –APA. World War I last female veteran Gladys Powers, who was 109, died in British Columbia in Canada earlier this month, APA quotes France Press. At 15, Powers lied about her age and joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, before moving to the RAF as a barracks waitress. It is thought she was the last female veteran from any country to have served in the war, following the death last year of American Charlotte Winters. The Ministry of Defense has been unable to produce records of her service as British First World War files were destroyed during the Blitz. Mrs Powers met Ed Luxford, a Canadian soldier, during the war and after marrying, the couple emigrated from Britain in 1920. She lived most of her life in Canada.
Currently only three veterans of the World War I are alive. They are 110-year old British citizen Henry Allingham, Harry Patch and 107-year old William Stone.
