# 24 April 2007 17:08 (UTC +04:00)
Last year Microsoft sat on top of the brand charts, but this year Google has taken the top spot and is officially the most powerful global brand 2007. The rankings are produced by market research and consulting firm Millward Brand, and are published in association with The Financial Times newspaper as "BRANDZ Top 100 Most Powerful Brands." The idea behind the ranking is to calculate the actual value of a brand to its owners in the future.
Google’s taking of the top spot was due to the value of its brand, which amounted to US$66.434 million; General Electric came in second at a value of $61.880 million. Last year’s winner, Microsoft, dropped to third with a value of $54.951 million, and Coca-Cola was fourth. Other notables in the rankings were IBM (ninth), Nokia (twelfth) and Apple (sixteenth).
Last year the total value of all 100 brands in the rankings was $1.44 trillion. This year that has increased by 10.6% to $1.6 trillion./APA/
