France says Gaddafi’s death opening new page in Libya

Baku-APA. Muammar Gaddafi’s "disappearance" opened "a new page" for Libya people, French president’s office the Elysee Palace said Thursday in a statement after Libya’s National Transitional Council (NTC) said the ousted Libyan leader was killed earlier in the day APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"The disappearance of Muammar Gaddafi is a major step in the struggle for over eight months by the Libyan people," the statement said.

"The liberation of Sirte marked ... the beginning of the process approved by the NTC to establish in Libya a democratic system in which all parts of the country will have their place and where fundamental freedoms will be guaranteed," the statement added.

"A new page opens for the Libyan people, the reconciliation in unity and freedom," it concluded.

Responding to reports of Gaddafi’s death, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe visiting in India welcomed "the end of 42 years’ of tyranny, military conflict" in Libya and said France was proud to have aided Libyan people.

French Defense Minister Gerard Longuet said if the news was confirmed, it a "good results."

Libya’s NTC said that Gaddafi was killed in the battle for Sirte, hometown of Gaddafi. The social network on the internet abounded with unconfirmed information that Gaddafi was dead from injuries.

The United States, the UN and Britain’s leaders prudently welcomed the news, however, more details are in need to confirm his death.
