The World Bank and the Azerbaijani State Committee for Affairs of Refugees and IDPs have jointly implemented credit projects worth nearly $170 million during 18-year cooperation, said Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov, who also chairs the State Committee.

These projects were aimed at creating infrastructure for refugees and IDPs, strengthening the existing potential in this sphere as well as developing other areas, Hasanov said addressing an event held in Baku to mark the 25th anniversary of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the World Bank.

According to him, the State Committee has for 18 years been using the World Bank’s transparent system as well as the experience of its qualified personnel to solve the problems of refugees and IDPs.

“At the same time, I should note that the World Bank, in turn, benefited from the systems and mechanism created by Heydar Aliyev and Ilham Aliyev in dealing with the problems of refugees and IDPs in Azerbaijan and applied the Azerbaijani model in other countries as well,” he said.

The deputy premier went on to say that Azerbaijan had no access to any international financial system during the period of the former Soviet Union, and it started to cooperate the World Bank 25 years ago after gaining its independence.

During the event, Mercy Tembon, World Bank Regional Director for the South Caucasus presented a letter of thanks to Ali Hasanov.
