Powerful quake strikes off Aceh, Indonesia

Baku-APA. An earthquake measuring 6.4 Richter scale jolted Aceh province in northern tip of Sumatra island on Sunday morning, but has no potential for triggering a tsunami, an official of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency told Xinhua by phone, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The agency official told Xinhua that the quake struck at 8:07 a. m. Jakarta time (0107 GT) with epicenter at 342 km southwest Aceh Jaya district and with the depth at 15 km under sea bed. The intensity of the quake was measured only at 2 to 3 MMI ( Modified Mercally Intensity) at Banda Aceh the capital of the province, he said. "We did not issue a tsunami warning as the quake was not potential for tsunami," he said.

The USGS on its website said the quake was at 6.2 magnitude with shallower location of 9.8 km under sea bed.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerable quake- hit zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
