ANAMA, ICRC mull cooperation on combatting mine threat

Vugar Suleymanov, Chairman of the Board of the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA) has met with Erik Tollefsen, Head of the Weapon Contamination Unit of the Protection and Basic Services Department of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), ANAMA told APA.

At the meeting, views were exchanged on expanding cooperation in the field of combating the threat of mines, explosive ordnance awareness and mine victim assistance, innovative approaches used to reduce the environmental impact of mines, as well as, the Center of Excellence to be created for the education of mining activities in Azerbaijan.

Erik Tollefsen emphasized that he highly evaluates the activities of the Agency and that many states should benefit from the experience of the Agency in this field.

It was noted that Erik Tollefsen spoke on the topic "Technological innovations in the field of combating the mine threat: environmental problems" at the relevant panel discussions of the 3rd international conference on “Mitigating Environmental Impact of Landmines: Resource Mobilization for Safe and Green Future” held in Azerbaijan on May 30-31 this year and shared his views on the strategic and operational aspects of mine problem elimination.
