The European Commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen has officially announced plans to develop a new European security strategy expected in the first semester of 2026, citing major geopolitical shifts, APA reports.
Speaking at a press conference in Cyprus during a visit of the College of Commissioners to mark the country’s six-month long presidency of the EU Council, von der Leyen said that “the time has come, during your presidency, to develop a new European security strategy.”
She said the aim would be to “collect all the knowledge to acknowledge the geostrategic changes and needs” but also to assess the “geopolitical changes to give an appropriate response”.
