Myanmar death toll rises to 15,000

On Monday the authorities were still reporting 10,000 dead in the entire Irrawaddy Delta with 3,000 people missing. Six million people are still without water and electricity and the streets are strewn with trees and rubble.
Myanmar’s military regime is now allowing emergency aid from the United Nations into the country. Many countries and international organizations have also pledged aid, including the United States, Australia and the European Union.
The US president’s wife Laura Bush has criticized the military junta for not warning its people about the cyclone in time. Mrs. Bush, who often acts as a spokesperson for US policy on Myanmar, said most of the information came from international stations such as Voice of America.
European Commission has allocated € 2 million to Myanmar.
Myanmar is situated in south-east Asia. It borders on India, Chine, Laos, Thailand and Bangladesh. Its territory is 678.000 square meters and it has 50 million populations. 90 % of population is Buddhist.
